Who we are
Tango Near Me is run by volunteers
Tango Near Me is volunteer-run and volunteer-led. It's built by dancers, teachers and organizers who want it to be easy to find tango anywhere in North America. Nobody is paid to list events, and nobody can pay to rank higher.
The directory is the first project of the North American Tango Association, a nonprofit we're forming to help Argentine tango grow in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Why
Why we're doing this
Tango runs on a few hundred teachers and organizers, most of whom do it for love. Classes are hard to fill, rent keeps going up, and bringing teachers from Buenos Aires now costs thousands in visa fees before anyone buys a plane ticket. Every community works this out alone. We'd like them to be able to share the work.
What we're working on
What the Association will do
- Finding tango. A free, accurate directory of milongas, prácticas, classes, festivals and teachers. That's this site.
- Better teaching. Training for teachers, organizers and DJs, with mentoring from people who've done it.
- Visiting artists. Plain visa guidance, group rates with an immigration attorney, and tours so several cities can share one visa.
- Residencies. A teaching couple settles in one city for six to eight weeks of classes, and tours on weekends.
- Community grants. Help for tango communities and nonprofits, mostly with the cost of space, so classes and milongas stay affordable and open to everyone.
How it's run
Independent, and open
- An independent board from across the continent, so no one studio, city or region runs it.
- A conflict-of-interest policy: board members' own studios and events get no special treatment here.
- We don't sponsor competitions. They're listed like any other event.
Tango nonprofits
Other tango nonprofits
Many communities already have a tango society, association or charity doing this work locally. We list them too. See tango nonprofits →
Listing policy
How listings work
- Public information only. We list what organizers and teachers already publish: names, places, times and links. Never personal phone numbers or emails.
- Checked against the source. We check every listing against the organizer's own page. If we can't confirm it, it doesn't go up.
- Teachers. We list teachers who have current public classes. If that's you, you can claim your listing, change it, or ask us to take it down.
- Removal on request. Ask, and we'll take it down.
- No ads. Listings are free. If we ever offer featured listings, they'll be clearly marked Featured.
- Festival dates. If a festival hasn't announced dates yet, we tell you when it usually happens instead of guessing.
This is an early version of the directory. If you spot a mistake, use "Report a correction" on the listing and we'll fix it. Want to help? Write to us through the contact page; we're always looking for volunteers.
